Underfloor Heating Integration: A Case Study in Modern Home Comfort Systems

Imperium Engineering led the structural design and delivery support for a full-scale refurbishment of a family home on Lorne Road. Valued at £317,000, this project combined structural alterations, internal reconfiguration, and a comprehensive underfloor heating installation (UK) across all levels of the property. The result is a warm, efficient, and contemporary living space—engineered with precision from the ground up.

Project Highlights

  • Full installation of multi-zone underfloor heating across three floors
  • Rear extension designed for open-plan family living
  • Structural modifications to remove internal walls and improve flow
  • Integration of smart climate controls
  • Delivered as part of a broader modern house refurbishment programme

Open Plan Structural Design

One of the core goals of the refurbishment was to open up the living, dining, and kitchen areas to create a more connected space. Our team provided a full open plan structural design, including the removal of internal load-bearing walls and the introduction of steel portal frames to maintain structural integrity.

These interventions enabled the homeowner to benefit from a light-filled, flexible ground floor while preserving lateral stability and load paths. New openings were also created to the rear of the home to integrate with the bespoke rear extension, which was designed to accommodate both additional living space and thermal performance enhancements.

Quality Control Across Multiple Properties

Delivering a uniform finish across six homes is no small task. We implemented a detailed quality control process with benchmark inspections on the first plot. Lessons learned were applied across subsequent builds, enabling faster delivery without compromising structural performance or finish.

Our engineers remained engaged throughout the build, working closely with site managers and contractors to resolve issues quickly, ensure clean installations, and maintain alignment with the architectural intent.

Heating Systems Built for Comfort and Efficiency

Underfloor heating systems perform best when integrated from the earliest stages of design—and that’s exactly how we approached this project. We coordinated floor build-ups, structural slab depths, and insulation systems to ensure efficient heat distribution throughout.

Our team tailored the system to work across different floor constructions—timber joists on upper levels and concrete screeds on the ground floor. This hybrid strategy ensured maximum performance without raising floor levels unnecessarily, preserving ceiling heights and transitions between rooms.

As part of our commitment to residential heating solutions, we also worked alongside M&E consultants to integrate smart thermostatic controls—giving the homeowner complete zone-by-zone temperature management.

Energy Efficient Home Improvements

This project was about more than just comfort. Every intervention—from wall insulation to heating systems—contributed to a more energy-efficient home. These energy efficient home improvements reduced ongoing energy costs and made the home future-proof for environmental standards.

The inclusion of airtightness upgrades, glazing replacements, and floor insulation all contributed to lowering heat loss and increasing thermal efficiency—ensuring the underfloor heating installation performs at its best year-round.

Outcome

The completed refurbishment at Lorne Road is a perfect example of modern house refurbishment with technical depth. The result is a beautifully modernised family home that feels warm, open, and efficient—backed by a structural design that enables long-term comfort and flexibility.

As with all our domestic projects, Imperium Engineering brought together smart structural solutions and comfort-focused technologies to elevate the everyday experience of living at home.
