Lewisham Library represents the dual challenge faced by many public-sector refurbishments: improving building usability while protecting historical integrity. Appointed as lead structural consultants, Imperium Engineering undertook a full assessment and feasibility study for a proposed rooftop terrace addition, bringing engineering rigour to a cherished local asset.
Imperium Engineering provided expert structural consultancy for Lewisham Library, developing a comprehensive assessment and feasibility study for potential rooftop terrace addition to this important community building.
Project Highlights
- Full structural assessment of a historic public building
- Non-destructive investigation techniques used throughout
- Load path and material compatibility studies
- Viability report for new rooftop terrace structure
- Feasibility-led design options supporting future expansion
A Sensitive Approach to Public Infrastructure
Lewisham Library plays a vital role as a community resource and cultural touchstone. Its proposed enhancement a new rooftop terrace for events and flexible use, demanded a structural solution that respected the building’s age and local significance.

We began with a comprehensive inspection using non-destructive testing methods, including ultrasonic concrete scanning, GPR (ground-penetrating radar), and material sampling at isolated locations. This preserved the building fabric while allowing accurate modelling of structural performance.

Structural Insight That Informs Design
Our engineers assessed the building’s ability to support the additional live loads and structural mass of a new terrace system, including:
- All new steels were protected with fire-rated boards or intumescent coatings
- Structural floor interfaces met 60-minute fire resistance standards
- Open-plan zones had clear escape routes with suitable travel distances
The team then produced a load impact report, detailing three technically viable scenarios for terrace addition—each with design implications, planning considerations, and budget brackets. This consultative approach allowed the client to make informed decisions early.
Heritage-Conscious Engineering
LKey to our success was our ability to work within the constraints of a historic structure. We identified permissible intervention zones that would minimise aesthetic disruption while delivering full structural safety. Recommendations included:
- Lightweight steel terrace frames bearing on core verticals
- Localised slab strengthening with minimal depth increase
- Discreet rainwater drainage routes
By respecting architectural lines and existing services, we created options that were not only viable but realistic in the context of a community building upgrade.
Outcome
Our report gave Lewisham Library’s stakeholders a clear pathway to enhancing their space while preserving its unique identity. The feasibility study now supports informed decision-making, budget planning, and community engagement.
This project reflects Imperium Engineering’s strength in public building structural consultancy, where practical upgrades must align with long-standing architectural value.
