Imperium Engineering led the structural refurbishment of Selene, a celebrated entertainment venue in central London. The £1.9 million project saw the transformation of a historic nightclub into a contemporary commercial space—retaining the character of the original structure while delivering upgraded performance and compliance standards.
Project Highlights
- Comprehensive structural assessment of a heritage entertainment venue
- Reinforcement and remodelling of internal walls with minimal disruption to original fabric
- Complete redesign of building services for new commercial functions
- Careful integration of modern systems with preserved architectural features
- Complex logistics management in a tight central London refurbishment zone
Technical Excellence in Urban Structural Engineering
This project was a showcase in urban structural engineering. As a multi-level venue located in one of London’s busiest districts, Selene posed significant spatial and logistical constraints. Our team carried out an in-depth structural survey to assess how much of the original framework could be retained and what required reinforcement or rebuilding.

Rather than opting for invasive reinforcement methods, we designed a tailored structural upgrade using high-strength steel and non-destructive techniques—ensuring the venue could meet current safety and load-bearing requirements without sacrificing its unique atmosphere.
Throughout the project, we managed on-site operations with precision, carefully coordinating access routes, material deliveries, and waste removal to meet city regulations and ensure minimal impact on surrounding businesses.

Heritage Building Refurbishment
This project also highlights our commitment to sustainability through adaptive reuse architecture. Rather than demolishing the existing structure, we retained its shell and built around it—preserving valuable embodied carbon and reducing construction waste.Selene is a perfect example of heritage building refurbishment done right. We worked closely with architects and planning officers to respect the cultural value of the space. Key architectural features—such as decorative plasterwork, staircases, and balustrades were preserved and incorporated into the new design.
This level of care is vital when retrofitting old buildings, particularly those with protected status or longstanding community significance. Our team balanced contemporary commercial standards with the essence of the building’s past life, demonstrating how old spaces can be adapted for new uses without losing their identity.
Commercial Building Renovation with Flexibility
The venue’s transformation from a nightclub to a new commercial destination required thoughtful spatial reconfiguration. We developed flexible internal layouts that allow for a variety of future tenant types, supported by new services risers, ventilation routes, and a modern fire strategy that meets the latest British Standards.
Our design was underpinned by a commitment to longevity—ensuring the building not only serves today’s commercial needs but is adaptable to future occupancy scenarios.
Outcome
Completed between April and November 2024, Selene now stands as a reimagined landmark that merges modern performance with rich architectural heritage. This commercial building renovation reinforces Imperium Engineering’s reputation for delivering technically demanding, culturally sensitive refurbishment projects across London.
We take pride in breathing new life into complex city structures—and Selene is a testament to our ability to blend the past and future in a single, coherent vision.
