Penthouse renovations offer some of the most luxurious transformation opportunities—but they also present unique structural complexities. At Compania House, a Thames-side high-rise, Imperium Engineering delivered an extensive structural upgrade to support the reconfiguration of a premium penthouse apartment.
With limited access, strict weight constraints, and the client’s desire for high-end finishes, this project demonstrates our capability in balancing luxury design with high-rise structural practicality.
Project Highlights
- Structural design for premium penthouse reconfiguration
- Lightweight solutions for load-restricted slab zones
- Sound isolation strategy between units
- Integration of new mechanical and electrical systems
- Execution in a live, occupied building
Engineering Above the City
Working at the top of a high-rise development requires precise coordination between structural requirements and building limitations. Compania House presented multiple vertical constraints: slab weight tolerances, vibration thresholds, and existing mechanical service lines running through the floor zone.

Our first step was a structural survey of the existing penthouse framing. Slab loading assessments confirmed that the new internal layout—featuring open-plan areas, additional wet rooms, and bespoke joinery—could not rely on standard materials or methods.

We specified a combination of lightweight steel subframes, hollow-core slab protection layers, and concealed steel posts to transfer loads efficiently without overloading critical points. All designs were checked for building movement tolerance and wind-related sway, ensuring long-term performance.
Soundproofing and Comfort at Height
A key component of luxury high-rise living is acoustic performance. The client was particularly concerned about noise transfer—both from surrounding apartments and internally between rooms. Our structural design was closely tied to acoustic consultancy, incorporating:
- Independent stud wall framing
- Floating floor treatments
- Concrete topping details isolated from joists
- Specialist materials around bathroom and mechanical zones
We also helped coordinate acoustic ceiling drops, which were integrated into the fire strategy and mechanical ventilation layout.
Service Integration and MEP Support
In penthouse developments, services are often retrofitted vertically through risers, making space extremely limited. To integrate the new lighting, HVAC, and plumbing without compromising ceiling heights or slab integrity, we:
- Re-routed non-loadbearing partition zones to hide risers
- Created dropped zones for plant above wet rooms
- Provided steel support for integrated ceiling units and concealed extract systems
Every detail was modelled to avoid slab drilling in restricted areas, protecting both structure and warranty coverage.
Working in Occupied Buildings
All works had to be delivered without impacting lower residents. Noise restrictions, time limits, and vertical logistics required a compact, pre-planned installation schedule. We staged beam deliveries via roof crane drop and performed noisy works during designated site-wide maintenance periods.
Imperium Engineering’s experience with structural upgrades in occupied buildings ensured the project progressed smoothly while maintaining compliance with leasehold and health & safety regulations.
Outcome
The Compania House penthouse now delivers an elegant, reconfigured living space at the top of one of London’s most desirable residential towers. Beneath the refined finishes lies a smart, resilient, and discreet structural system—proof that world-class living requires world-class engineering.
From structural reconfiguration to acoustic isolation and MEP compatibility, we helped elevate not just the view—but the entire experience of urban penthouse living.
