Elevating Living Spaces: Structural Solutions for a Loft and Side Extension at Baldwyn Gardens

Imperium Engineering provided complete structural services for a compact but technically challenging residential extension at Baldwyn Gardens. Combining a loft conversion, internal alterations, and a two-storey side extension, the project was delivered in under a month—with full compliance and minimal disruption to the homeowners.

Project Highlights

  • Full loft extension structural design
  • Reinforcement strategies for original load-bearing walls and floors
  • Structural engineering for a two-storey side extension
  • Timely delivery within a four-week window
  • Compliance with current UK building regulations

Tailored Residential Structural Design

Our first step in this project was to conduct a detailed site survey and structural assessment of the existing property. This ensured our design solutions aligned precisely with the home’s existing geometry, load paths, and materials.

The residential structural calculations included designing steel beams for the loft floor and ridge support, as well as lateral bracing to resist wind loads introduced by the new roof height. Reinforced concrete pads and foundations were calculated to support the vertical extension, integrating seamlessly with the original footings.

The side extension added valuable footprint to the ground and first floors—expanding the kitchen, adding a utility space, and creating a new bedroom above—all while maintaining balance with the existing structure and external aesthetic.

Speed, Precision, and Compliance

One of the key achievements of this project was the speed of delivery. From design sign-off to on-site execution, the entire structural programme was completed in just under four weeks—an exceptional turnaround for this level of complexity.

This was made possible by close collaboration between our engineers, the architectural designer, and the contractor. Clear detailing, fast communication, and staged delivery allowed progress without delays or redesigns.

Of course, working quickly never means compromising standards. All elements of the design met or exceeded current UK building regulations, particularly in relation to thermal bridging, structural loading, and party wall conditions.

Supporting Seamless Project Execution

As experienced structural engineers for home extensions, we understand the balance between technical rigour and on-site practicality. Our role extended beyond design drawings—we provided contractor support during critical stages, offering clear advice to ensure accurate implementation and prevent costly on-site changes.

We also provided documentation suitable for Building Control approval and worked with the client to manage risk through well-documented sequencing and temporary works guidance.

Outcome

The completed project gave the homeowners additional space, improved flow, and significantly increased property value—all within a very short programme. The combination of loft, internal, and side extension has transformed the living experience without the need for relocation.

At Imperium Engineering, we pride ourselves on delivering smart, efficient solutions for residential properties. This project is a prime example of how structural engineering can elevate everyday living through clever design and seamless execution.
